What is a Sport Hybrid?

  • Power and efficiency: Most manufacturers have a hard time reconciling these two ideals. One has to come at the expense of the other. Or does it? At Acura, the answer is “No.” The RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® not only excels at both, with 377 total system horsepower66 and a 30 combined mpg rating,2 but sets—and achieves—a third goal: Extraordinary Handling.
  • Unlike many other hybrids designed solely for fuel efficiency, the powerful V-6 engine in the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® has not been tamed. The engine retains its exhilarating performance, including 273 lbs.-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm (SAE Net), i-VTEC technology and direct injection.
  • Working with the gasoline engine, the powerful front electric motor supplies prodigious torque during hard acceleration and extra fuel efficiency at low cruising speeds. The power unit also houses the new Motor-integrated 7-Speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission).
  • It is revolutionary engineering: Two independent electric motors to drive the rear wheels. Through a curve, they produce positive and negative torque—also known as torque vectoring—to deliver unprecedented cornering capabilities. Working in unison, the motors provide power for standing starts, low-speed cruising and, when called upon, vigorous rolling acceleration.
  • Launch Acceleration

    Don’t call it the gas pedal anymore. From a standing start, acceleration on the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® is swift and electric—making use of the dual rear motors to drive the rear wheels. Unlike gasoline engines, electric motors produce 100% of their torque the moment they are engaged. It’s something you’ll appreciate as you watch the speedometer needle rapidly climb north.

  • Rolling Acceleration

    When a very short onramp and fast-moving traffic warrant aggressive acceleration, the gasoline engine and all three electric motors work in assertive harmony. Right when you need it, they can deliver immense power to all four wheels and amazed expressions to all four passengers.

  • SH-AWD Hard Cornering

    On a twisting road, the RLX Sport Hybrid is fully in its element. The rear electric motors augment handling prowess by independently applying positive and negative torque to the rear wheels. This torque vectoring helps rotate the car through the turn. Sport Hybrid SH-AWD lets you carve a professional driver’s precise line through a challenging curve, whether traveling at high speed, accelerating or simply coasting. It is truly exhilarating—and groundbreaking.

  • High-Speed Cruising

    At highway speeds the 310-hp V-6 gets the assignment—with support from the front electric motor when essential. Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) increases your fuel efficiency by allowing the engine to run on only three cylinders. When you need to quickly pass an 18-wheeler, the VCM system instantly fires all six cylinders, and the electric motors, if necessary. Pass completed, the engine returns to three-cylinder power. The transition is imperceptible, until you look at your average mpg.

  • SH-AWD In Slippery Conditions

    Wet conditions don’t have to be intimidating. Quite the opposite. Even on rain-slicked or snow-covered pavement, the RLX Sport Hybrid feels firmly planted. When a sudden summer storm soaks the road, Sport Hybrid SH-AWD monitors speed, road conditions, driver input and other factors to distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. Confidence can, in fact, be engineered.

  • Regenerative Braking

    Finally, a reason to appreciate stoplights and stop-and-go traffic. When braking or coasting—two events that occur frequently during a morning and evening commute—the hybrid system captures kinetic energy and uses it to charge the state-of-the-art Lithium-Ion battery.

  • Low-Speed Cruising

    The advanced hybrid system always delivers as much—or as little—power as you need. Navigating a crowded parking lot or driving through your neighborhood, the two rear electric motors can smoothly and quietly propel the rear wheels. As you accelerate to a higher speed, gasoline power and the front electric motor seamlessly join in.

Shifting should be complex for the transmission, not the driver. With one touch of the Electronic Gear Selector, you activate the gifted, Motor-integrated 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). The unique interface makes it equally simple to shift into reverse or apply the electronic parking brake. Steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters are provided for the driver who wants to take a more hands-on approach. With Acura’s new dual-clutch technology, all shifts are lightning-fast and extremely efficient.
