The ILX Hybrid is powered by the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)® System which has been designed on the premise that much of an engine’s power is only used during acceleration or on steep inclines. Thus, the system incorporates a 1.5-liter, 8-valve, i-VTEC® 4-cylinder gasoline engine along with an electric motor. The small, efficient engine operates alone when cruising at a steady speed while the electric motor assists the engine when additional power is required.

  • Together, the motor and engine produce 111 hp @ 5500 rpm while torque is 127 @ 1000-350066.
  • Connected exclusively to the continuously variable transmission, the engine has an EPA fuel economy rating of 39 miles per gallon in the city, 38 on the highway and 38 combined.2
  • Under certain conditions, the electric motor alone can propel the car up to 45 mph.
  • Deceleration and braking recharge the battery that supplies power to the electric motor.

The 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters gives you the best of both worlds by providing the convenience of precise and intuitive automatic shifting as well as shift-for-yourself control.

  • Set the transmission to “Drive” for smooth gear changes with an emphasis on fuel efficiency. Select “Sport” for quicker acceleration, as the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before up-shifting.
  • The steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters deliver quick, precise shifts at your fingertips.
  • Tapping a paddle shifter while in “Drive” brings a quick gear change with automatic operation returning when reaching a steady speed. This allows you to make quick gear changes without changing in and out of manual mode.
  • Using a paddle shifter in “Sport” puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you’ll have complete control during high-performance or hilly driving.
  • Shift Hold Control keeps the transmission in its current (lower) gear ratio when the throttle is quickly released and the brakes are applied, such as entry into a tight curve. This leaves the chassis undisturbed by excessive shifting.

Six ratios make it easy to keep the ILX in your favorite part of the engine’s rev band, while the smoothness of the linkage makes shifting a joy.

  • The shifter features short throws and precise linkage for quick, confident shifting.
  • The clutch requires low-effort movement, reducing leg fatigue and has short-pedal movement for faster operation.
  • Gear changes are made smoother with multi-cone synchronizers for the first four gears.

The ILX Hybrid is equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The CVT works like that of a multi-speed bicycle, in which different ratios are achieved by changing the size of gears on each side of a chain. Yet instead of a chain with multiple gears on each end, the transmission uses a metal push-belt, running between a pair of pulleys that continuously vary their diameter.

  • Rather than the five or six ratios of common automatic transmissions, the CVT offers an infinite number so as to provide the most efficient drive ratio possible at all times.
  • When combined with the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle, the CVT allows the engine to stay at its most efficient RPM while speed is adjusted largely by ratio changes.
  • Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allow you to switch between pre-determined fixed ratios to give you control of the transmission when desired.

The ILX uses a combination of MacPherson struts for the front suspension and a multi-link arrangement in the rear. Using a strut-style front suspension makes more room available for crash reinforcement. The multi-link rear suspension helps maximize second-row seating and cargo space—all while providing outstanding handling and ride quality.

  • The MacPherson struts front suspension has specially tuned bushings and performance-calibrated geometry, providing optimal wheel alignment while turning for smooth, solid handling.
  • The multi-link rear suspension includes stamped-steel upper A-arms, cast aluminum knuckles, double lower lateral links, steel-toe control links, coil-over dampers and a large stabilizer bar.
  • The 5-Speed Automatic and 6-Speed Manual models use a 20 mm diameter front stabilizer bar to reduce body roll, while the Hybrid uses a 19mm front bar due to its lower center of gravity. All models have a 14 mm rear stabilizer bar.
  • Amplitude Reactive Dampers feature two pistons per damper (a.k.a. shock absorber) rather than one. The first piston reacts to help absorb minor road vibration, while the second one is stiffer, reigning in a larger suspension motion for improved stability.

The ILX steering system is a good example of the subtle ways a luxury car differentiates itself from more conventional vehicles.

  • Extremely rigid mounting for the steering column increases linear feel for greater steering precision while reducing low and high-speed vibration.
  • The rack-and-pinion is tuned to provide a smooth, linear transition between generous power assist at low speeds and a firmer feel at higher speeds.
  • Electronic, rather than hydraulic power, assist does not draw mechanical power from the engine, increasing its efficiency.

The four-wheel disc brakes are designed with several subtle enhancements to improve their performance over conventional cars of the same size.

  • Strengthened calipers improve effectiveness, while enlarged splash shields help increase fade resistance.
  • The pedal shape is designed to direct force on the pedal center to increase response.
  • The ILX 5-Speed Automatic has 11.1-inch ventilated discs in the front, while the 6-Speed Manual model has 11.8-inch front discs. Both have 10.2-inch discs in the rear.
  • Electronic Brake Distribution uses the anti-lock brake sensors to determine the proportion of brake force to be channeled to each wheel for increased performance and stability.

Though not apparent to the naked eye, body structure is one of the best examples of what distinguishes the ILX from conventional cars of its size.

  • Significant structural enhancements can be found at the frames around each door opening and across the rear of the trunk-lid opening.
  • Other enhancements include reinforced joints and replacing multiple components with single components to smooth stress flow.
  • Lateral flex has been reduced through strengthened joints around the front suspension sub-frame mounting.
  • Close to 59% of the vehicle’s weight is made up of high-tensile steel, which is lighter and stiffer than conventional structural steel.
  • Aluminum was used for the hood to reduce the center of gravity and at the bumper beams to reduce polar inertia, both of which improve handling.
